Week One NFL previews & betting selections
(Sunday's games)

Actual results are posted in red

ATLANTA FALCONS 20 at CAROLINA PANTHERS 6
Atlanta was woefully out of form at the end of last season and Carolina won both fixtures against them last season.  Carolina is fancied in the early Super Bowl betting on the basis of the form that saw them reach the NFC title game last year. Little wonder the Panthers are –5 favorites with the online sportsbooks.
Betting Selection:
Panthers to defy the –5pts.

BALTIMORE RAVENS 27 at TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS 0
Tampa Bay are a narrow –3pt favorite on the game betting with the online sportsbooks. The Ravens are relying on Steve McNair to rescue an offense that chalked up 17 or less points on a dozen occasions last year. Baltimore’s away form was abysmal last season – with an unenviable record of eleven losing road games on the trot. Combine that with the fact that Tampa Bay had the best league defense last year and the Ravens surely have it all to do to get a good result here.
Betting selection:
Tampa Bay to win by more than the 3pts handicap.

BUFFALO BILLS 17 at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS 19
Patriots are favorites – the online sportsbooks giving them a 10pt deficit to overcome. The stats tell the story of that 10pt handicap as New England have beaten the Bills ten times in the last eleven fixtures. In recent clashes the average margin of victory was way over the 10pt deficit. The Bills had a disastrous end of season last year. It all looks set for another easy triumph for Patriots.
Betting selection:
The team at USAbetting.com reckon the value lies with the Bills and their 10pt start.

CINCINNATI BENGALS 23 at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 10
The Chiefs are a narrow favorite conceding 2pts on the handicaps at the online sportsbooks. If there had been no pre-season you would get your cash out from under the mattress for the Chiefs – after all they slaughtered the Bengals in the finale (2005) by a margin of 34 points. A year can be a long time in NFL football and the Bengals have had a glorious pre-season, remaining unbeaten.
Betting selection: This looks a tough one to call but we just side with Kansas giving away two points.

DENVER BRONCOS 10 at ST LOUIS RAMS 18
The Broncos are favorites conceding 3.5pts. St Louis was beaten by 20pts in their final pre-season game against the Dolphins, while the Broncos beat Arizona in their final game.
Betting selection: Both teams have obvious flaws and so this will be another tough one to call but recent form suggests the Broncos can give away the 3.5pts and still win.

NEW ORLEANS SAINTS 19 at CLEVELAND BROWNS 14
Interestingly in the last four clashes between Saints and Browns at Cleveland the result has been by four or less. Cleveland are favorites at –3pts with the online sportsbooks. Maybe this is because the Browns have won the last three fixtures against the Saints. Both teams have been rebuilt since last season.
Betting selection: Saints to win with their 3pt start.
