NFL Reviews: Week Three

Emotions high as Saints go marching in

Hurricane Katrina had propelled the Louisiana Superdrome into national focus – a safe haven when the world appeared to have gone mad. So it was only fitting that the New Orleans Saints first home game since Katrina wreaked her havoc ended with an against-the-odds victory. The Saints hammered the Atlanta Falcons, favorites in the NFL matchup betting, by 23 to 3.

Baltimore made it three wins from three by the narrowest margin against Cleveland. Matt Stover’s field goal (52 yards) in the dying seconds of the game clinched an unlikely win by 15 to 14.

It was not quite so close in the clash between Denver and New England. The former won by 17 to 7. Another nail-bitingly close encounter saw St Louis defeat Arizona 16-14 in the NFC West clash.

The hero of Philadelphia’s high-scoring defeat over San Francisco was Brian Westbrook. He posted a total of three touchdowns and one hundred and sixty four yards and three touchdowns in the 38-24 triumph.

Green in pink as Lions raw

Brett Favre, 36, who so nearly retired last year, reached an historic landmark as his Green Bay Packers beat the Detroit Lions. Favre threw three touchdown passes and a total 340yds. In the process Favre became only the second quarterback after Dan Marino to reach a career 400. The score was another high points affair, 31-24.

John Kasay left it oh so late to seal victory for the Carolina Panthers over Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers lost 26-24 after old-timer Kasay kicked a field goal just two seconds from time. It had looked likely to be far easier for the Panthers in the first half, when they showed the way by seventeen points to nil. There was a very sad note to the game as the Tampa Bay quarterback, Chris Simms, had his spleen removed in hospital after getting injured in the game. A full recovery is expected.

Yet another late pass sealed a tight-run affair for Chicago. The Bears beat Minnesota 19-16 but not before Bears’ Rex Grossman launched a touchdown pass to Davis with just over a minute remaining.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were on the receiving end of a heroic performance by Carson Palmer. He was responsible for supplying four touchdowns for Cincinnati, helping the the Bengals to a 28-20 victory.

Houston, we have a problem

Peyton Manning put paid to the in-form Jacksonville Jaguars. He shone in Indianapolis’s 21 to 14 defeat of Jacksonville. In other matches, Chad Pennington starred for the New York Jets as they beat Buffalo 28 to 20. In a battle of the out-of-form teams Tennessee just lost out 13 to 10 against the Dolphins.

Washington boosted their ailing confidence against an all-at-sea Houston Texans team with a convincing 31-15 win. The Texans can at least take some heart from the fact they managed to get points on the board, but they are surely going to continue to struggle as the season progresses unless drastic changes are made.
