A battle of the MLS basement boys is in prospect as Atlanta United take on DC United on Saturday (4pm ET; TV: Live on Fox).
There may not be too much riding on the game in terms of progression beyond the postseason but matches such as these can often produce the best value from a betting perspective. The campaign isn’t quite over for either side and, at the very least, the desire to drive away from the bottom of the table should produce a fascinating encounter.
ATLUTD vs DCU Sportsbooks’ Moneyline Odds
Atlanta have a four-point advantage over DC United in the Eastern Conference and that has helped to make Stephen Glass’ side the clear favorites at the top stateside betting outlets. Atlanta can be backed at average odds of around -125 while a win for DC is on offer at a best of +360. Completing the moneyline market is the draw and there will be some interest in a share of the points at +275.
Both sides come into Saturday’s clash on the back of a poor run of form although DC United did pick up three points at Cincinnati last time out. It wasn’t enough to lift the club off the bottom of the table thanks to two defeats and a draw in the three games prior to that result.
Over in the Atlanta United camp, the Five Stripes have drawn two and lost two of their last four so the form book tips slightly towards the away side on Saturday.
Atlanta v DC Utd Prop Bets’ Options
Matches involving Atlanta have been low scoring of late and, in the previous four games, Stephen Glass’ men have scored just once. The defense has been tight at the same time with just three goals conceded so we may not see too many strikes over the course of 90 minutes. Over the same, four-match period, DC United’s stats are better with six goals but they have let in nine at the wrong end of the pitch.
Both Teams to Score is available at around -135 and, while this is a popular pick of ours, that looks short based on form. Alternatively, you can vote ‘no’ on BTTS and take that figure up to +100 (evens) in places.
Those recent stats are also affecting our thinking in the Total Goals market where the popular pick to go above the 2.5 line is available at an average of -125. This could be a day to bet below that line and claim general odds of -110.
Individual goal scorer betting has started to trickle in through the week and the markets list Ezequiel Barco as the clear favorite to open the scoring. Atlanta’s Argentine striker hasn’t been the most prolific during his time at the Mercedes Benz Stadium but he has scored twice in five MLS matches so far this season.
A second favorite at a best of +600 to score the first goal, Atlanta’s Jon Gallagher follows while DC’s first representative is Ola Kamara at around +650. The much traveled Norwegian international has yet to find the same form that made him an MLS hit with Columbus Crew and LA Galaxy but, if Kamara gets the service, he can convert at a decent set of odds.
As for the correct score, USAbetting is edging towards a share of the points in what should be a low scoring game. It is tempting to suggest a 0-0 outcome but there should be plenty of efforts on goal as these teams look to climb the table. 1-1 would be our suggestion for a small wager at odds of around +600.
Our MLS Match Preview’s Atlanta vs DC Predictions & Betting Picks Verdict
Trends are there to be broken but all of the statistics point towards a close, low scoring match on Saturday. DC United have a better scoring record in recent MLS games but, they are the bottom side and will struggle to break down Atlanta’s tight defense.
As for the home squad, the struggles in front of goal are clearly evident and have prevented Atlanta from making any meaningful assault on the playoff places.
In summary, we expect these two sides to cancel each other out but there should be goals. A low scoring draw is the verdict with those draw odds representing some reasonable value with the offshore bookies’ betting lines.
Under 2.5 goals could have offered a better price so you may want to look at Both Teams to Score as an alternative. It is a close call for us but we’ll take that ‘under’ bet this time.
Finally, Ola Kamara to score in 90 minutes is the closing pick. The Norwegian is due a goal after a slow start to the campaign and the odds will be favorable after his recent drought.
In short, these are our ATLUTD vs DCU predictions and concluding betting picks for this MLS match preview:
- Bet the draw on the moneyline @ best odds of +275 with BetOnline.
- Expect Ola Kamara to score at any time in 90 minutes @ +280 with Bovada.
- Go under 2.5 goals @ -105 with Bookmaker. It is almost the same at -106 with BetOnline.
