Cincinnati vs NY Red Bulls Preview, Predictions, Betting Picks: Home In On Moneyline

Luciano AcostaTwo Major League Soccer teams looking to refind the winning thread following draws last weekend go head-to-head at Q2 Stadium on Saturday as Cincinnati take on New York Red Bulls (7.30pm ET). Can either team get back to winning ways? This FC Cincy vs RBNY preview, with betting predictions and picks, plans to answer that.

Last season’s Eastern Conference winners have picked up their form of late, beating both the New England Revolution and New York City FC in quick succession. They were unable to continue their winning run last time out, as they came from behind to draw on the road in Charlotte, scoring late in the day through Aaron Boupendza. Pat Noonan’s men showed that they remain a team that is hard to beat in that game and will likely approach this home game full of confidence.

The NY Red Bulls were also unable to extend their winning run last time out, following their big win against Inter Miami with a 1-1 tie against Orlando City. They once again took the lead through the ever-present Lewis Morgan, who coolly slotted home from the penalty spot after 21 minutes. They couldn’t add to their lead, nor could they hold off a late push from the hosts, who denied the Red Bulls a win through an 89th minute goal. After a decent away-day performance, though, Sandro Schwarz’s men will be looking for another good result.

Home comforts suit FC Cincy

Sure, Noonan’s men failed to get the job done last weekend, but they still played quite well, especially in the final third, while they will be confident ahead of a game at a venue where they really are very hard to beat.

So far this term, Saturday’s hosts, FC Cincinnati, who currently sit top of the Eastern Conference, have played three games at home, and while they’ve not exploded into life offensively, they’ve looked secure. Not only did they keep a clean sheet in their opening home game of the campaign, shutting out TFC, dominating the game too, coming out on top in terms of shots, shots on target and xG, but they also kept a clean sheet against both D.C. United and New York City. Ok, they have scored just one goal, but they’ve produced a decent average of 1.37 xG for, while it is fair to say that they have definitely looked more threatening as the games have gone on.

RBNY not firing on the road

At this stage of the campaign, the Red Bulls are well positioned in the Eastern Conference as they sit in third place, but much of that is down to their rather strong home form. They have played four games on the road, and sure, they’ve only lost one, but they’ve only won one too. They have not looked particularly menacing when playing on the road, which is key.

They failed to score away against Nashville SC in their first away game of the season, while they have since scored just three in three, failing to score in two out of four in total. The way in which they crumbled (losing 3-0) in Columbus wasn’t great. They may have fought hard last time out to grab a point in Orlando, but they again looked timid offensively, scoring through a penalty, mustering only one other shot on target.

Wins few and far between for NYRB

NY Red Bulls did beat FC Cincinnati as recently as October 2023, winning by two goals to one at Q2 Stadium, but they’ve not made a habit of picking up wins in this fixture. Saturday’s visitors have won just one of their last eight games against Cincy, losing three of those eight. When the teams last met at this venue, in last season’s playoffs, Cincinnati won 3-0.

Hosts FC Cincy once again hard to oppose

In the early betting, it is hard to go against the hosts, who look nicely poised to win this fixture. The Orange and Blue are top of the Eastern Conference for a reason. They are very hard to make headway against and they are great at dominating games, while they have got that killer instinct, even if they haven’t shown it as much this term.

In their most recent home game, the hosts were all over NYCFC, so much so that they really should’ve won by more than just a single goal. A repeat of that effort here should see them get the job done.

While the hosts have produced pleasing home averages of 1.37 xG for, 6.66 shots on target for, 0.45 xG against and 3.33 shots on target against, the visitors have produced slightly less impressive averages of 1.12 xG for, 3.25 shots on target for, 1.03 xG against and 4.25 shots on target.

Moreover, the Red Bulls last two away-day efforts are hard to ignore. They scored just once in those two games, and from the penalty spot, while they created very little, which ahead of a game against a team that gives next to nothing away at home is far from ideal. Of course, they do have Lewis Morgan in that front line, who is consistent and capable of making headway against most teams, but they have failed to provide their Scottish forward with the right service, which again, isn’t ideal ahead of a game against the top team in the east.

In contrast, Luciano Acosta looked in fine form when the hosts beat the Red Bulls’ New York rivals in their last home game, and with the Argentine in attack here, we shouldn’t be surprised if Noonan’s men just have too much in the locker.
