Fortinet Championship 2023 Golf Odds, Preview & Predictions: 16/1 Betting Pick

Sahith TheegalaThe 2023/24 PGA Tour season gets underway on Thursday as the Fortinet Championship 2023 hits the schedules. Previously known as the Safeway Open, this tournament has been run since 2007 and it is now become the traditional curtain raiser for the new campaign.

It has been three weeks since the Tour Championship brought an end to the previous season. Some golfers have stayed in shape by switching to the DP World Tour, but most US players have taken the opportunity to rest. It’s a mixed field heading into Thursday, so let’s see who is in contention with this Fortinet preview with its predictions and betting picks.

Max Homa returns as the defending champion and a man looking for a rare three-peat on Tour. Homa won the Fortinet Championship in 2021 and 2022, and he will start this week as the clear favorite at best industry odds of 15/2.

It has been over ten years since Steve Stricker became the most recent player to win the same tournament three years in succession. Homa finished last season in good form with four straight top ten finishes, and he clearly likes this course, so he is definitely a strong contender.

Behind the market leader comes Justin Thomas at a top price of 14/1. JT has obvious quality and his reputation earned him a call up to the Ryder Cup team. An alarming slump last term means that backers should be wary.

Next is Sahith Theegala at a best of 16/1, followed by Cam Davis and Stephan Jaeger who are both quoted at 22/1. Theegala was the unluckiest man on the circuit at the end of last season, when he finished in 31st place in the FedEx rankings and just missed out on the Tour Championship. Both Davis and Jaeger finished the campaign strongly and all three should be watched this week.

Moving through, Eric Cole and Beau Hossler can be backed at 33/1, while Brendon Todd and J.J. Spaun are available at 35/1. Of those names. Hossler has a good record in this event, and averages 69 in 11 rounds on this course. Cole finished last season with ten consecutive cuts made. Other names to mention in this section include Andrew Putnam and Lucas Herbert, who can both be claimed at 40/1.

The outsiders for the 2023 edition of the Fortinet Championship start with a clutch of golfers who are all available at the same best odds of 50/1. Alex Noren, Chez Reavie, Webb Simpson, Akshay Bhatia and Justin Suh are all listed at that figure with the major USA sportsbooks in places.

Suh is one of the only golfers to have remained active during the PGA close season and he finished in a respectable tie for 24th in the European Masters. Bhatia is one of the up-and-coming players on Tour and will be one to watch across 2023/24.

Close behind is Kevin Streelman at a top price of 55/1. Streelman tied for third in this event three years ago, and is attracting some interest in the betting lines this week.

Before moving on, the list of other golfers to consider might include Matt Kuchar at 55/1, Cameron Champ at 66/1, Austin Eckroat at 66/1, Luke List at 80/1, Mackenzie Hughes at 80/1, Ryan Palmer at 100/1 and Stewart Cink at 100/1.

Fortinet Golf 2023 Course & Betting Trends with Predictions & Picks for this Preview

This tournament is played on the North Course of the Silverado Country Club in Napa, California. It is a standard par-72, coming in at 7,166 yards. There has been an interesting switch in the layout this year, which has seen holes 8-11 become 14-17. At the same time, 12-17 are now 8-13. There is no change to the overall length of the course, but this does mean that the back nine is now a par 37, with three par 5s in play. Stamina and par-5 scoring could, therefore, be useful this week.

Greens in Regulation will be a desirable stat on any course, but the primary rough is lower this year at 2.5 inches, so the marginally wayward drives should go unpunished.

It is an interesting week and it’s easy to see why Max Homa is clear at the top of the market. He has been champion two years in succession, finished last season strongly and the field is of limited strength in depth.

However, there will be strong challenges among the pack and one name that interests us is that of Sahith Theegala. He is set for a breakthrough season after an impressive campaign last time out and he tied for sixth in this tournament in 2022.

Theegala has made the cut in all three appearances at the Fortinet Championship and he is our outright pick. Plus we rely on some other top 10 finish predictions and picks for this Fortinet betting preview:
