Memorial Tournament 2022 Odds Guide, Preview, Predictions & Betting Picks: 20/1 Xander Returning To Best

Xander SchauffeleHeading into June and a packed Tour schedule means that another golf Major is due this month. With two weeks left until the US Open, there is a typically mixed field for the Memorial Tournament 2022 with some players resting and others looking to find some form ahead of the bigger event.

The Memorial Tournament itself has been on the circuit since 1976 and was founded by Jack Nicklaus. Muirfield Village, the course that he designed two years earlier, is the consistent venue. So let’s see if this preview can pick out some winners with our predictions and betting picks as we head to Dublin, Ohio.

Two top European golfers kick things off this week with Jon Rahm at best industry odds of 11/1, followed by Rory McIlroy at a top price of 12/1. Rahm was the Memorial Tournament champion in 2020 after he saw off Ryan Palmer by three strokes and we can’t forget that he held a six-shot lead after the third round last year before a positive Covid test forced him to withdraw.

McIlroy is under the spotlight after a frustrating end to the PGA Championship two weeks ago. Aside from his slide down the leaderboard at Southern Hills, form is consistent for Rory with three top 10 finishes in his last three starts.

Patrick Cantlay became the first multiple winner of the Memorial Tournament in ten years when he claimed his second title twelve months ago. Cantlay edged out Collin Morikawa in a playoff and he starts his defense at best odds of 18/1. With those figures, Cantlay heads up the chasing pack based on his wins in 2019 and 2021 and, although he benefited from Jon Rahm’s withdrawal, it’s clearly one of his favored events.

Slightly further back at 20/1 is last year’s runner up Collin Morikawa while Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith follow at 22/1. Spieth has made the cut eight times in nine starts at Muirfield Village with six top 20 finishes. Morikawa’s form is a worry but his solid mix of tee to green power and accuracy can be a good fit for this course.

Other names to consider from among this group in the betting lines include Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland who are also at 20/1, followed by Shane Lowry at 25/1. Schauffele is of interest to us with some solid finishes and a good run of three Top 15s in this tournament.

Hideki Matsuyama and Matt Fitzpatrick head up the outsiders this week at best odds of 28/1 while PGA Championship runner up Will Zalatoris is available at 30/1. England’s Fitzpatrick continues to knock on the door and is getting ever closer to his first PGA Tour win.

Matsuyama is a former champion and his breakthrough win came in the Memorial Tournament in 2014. The 2021 Masters champion ranks fourth in par-5 scoring this season and that could be significant this week.

In a packed final section, other names to look at include Max Homa and Cameron Young at 40/1, Joaquin Niemann at 45/1, Mito Pereira at 50/1, plus Marc Leishman, Keegan Bradley and Seamus Power who can all be found at a top price of 70/1.

Our 2022 Memorial Tournament Preview’s Course & Betting Trends with Predictions & Picks Verdict

Muirfield Village Golf Club in Columbus Ohio offers a regular par 72 but there is some value for the distance hitters on a course that comes in at a fraction over 7,500 yards. While most fairways are wide, there is some punishing four-inch rough in play, so a combination of power and accuracy is ideal off the tee. Greens are small and can be slow but accuracy into the putting surfaces is also vital.

Patrick Cantlay completed his second win in 2021 and he’s one of seven players to have lifted the Memorial Tournament trophy on more than one occasion. Tiger Woods is the record holder with five overall wins. This preview is looking for power first but that mix of accuracy is essential. Par 5 scoring can also tip the balance over four days.

One man who looks to be back to his best is Xander Schauffele. A recent round of 61, followed by a tie for 13th at the PGA Championship suggests he is almost there and this is the type of field that he can thrive in. Schauffele has solid stats which can be relevant for this week and he is our outright betting pick. With three additional top 10 finish picks, this preview is primed to get back to winning ways as we head to Ohio. So these are our Memorial Tournament betting predictions:

  • Xander Schauffele to win @ best odds of +2000 (20/1) with Bovada, BetOnline & EveryGame.
  • Top 10 Finish Betting Picks (odds from BetOnline who are biggest odds on all these players): Schauffele (+210), Matthew Fitzpatrick (+280), Max Homa (+350) and Seamus Power (+550).
