NYCFC vs San Jose Earthquakes Preview, Predictions, Betting Picks

Santiago RodriguezNYCFC host the San Jose Earthquakes in cross-conference action in the MLS on Friday (7.30pm ET). While the hosts come into this game in fantastic form, the visitors have struggled of late. Can they improve or will we see the high-flying home team thrive once more? Read this preview, with betting picks and predictions, to find out.

Nick Cushing’s New York team were halted in their tracks by the Rapids a few weeks ago, losing in seemingly unlikely fashion in front of a home crowd at Yankee Stadium. That defeat, which was their first in six games, could have derailed the momentum being built by NYCFC. They have quickly bounced back, winning four on the spin, beating the likes of TFC, the Union, the Revs and their bitter rivals the New York Red Bulls. Such form has seen Saturday’s hosts surge up the Eastern Conference table and into a lofty third position.

For the Earthquakes, things have gone the other way in recent weeks. Saturday’s visitors did find some form around the start of the month, first beating LAFC, which was a fantastic win, before securing a US Open Cup victory, which was followed by a win over the Rapids. However, such victories have not acted as a springboard for further success. Since that triumph in Colorado, Luchi Gonzalez’s men have gone four games without a win, losing back-to-back MLS games, before being dumped out of the cup by USL outfit Sacramento Republic. Fortunately, they stopped the rot with a timely draw against Austin FC last time out but can they now kick on?

Yankee Stadium a fortress for NYCFC

As mentioned briefly above, the Rapids did cause a little bit of an upset at Yankee Stadium recently, poaching a 0-2 victory, thanks to a solid counter-attacking display, but results of that nature have been a rarity in recent months and look like they will continue to be scarce going forward. Even in that game, Cushing’s men were dominant, while they have otherwise been virtually perfect at home, at least in terms of results. They have won four of their last five home games, as well as five of their last seven, only one of which they have lost.

As things stand in the Eastern Conference, of those teams to have played eight home games this season, only Inter Miami have claimed more home points than NYCFC, which is not a stat to ignore.

Goals galore for San Jose Earthquakes

The visitors are far from slouches offensively, even on the road, where they have scored a respectable total of 15 goals this season. In fact, such a total is impressive. No Western Conference team has scored more goals than the Earthquakes, who will arrive at Yankee Stadium having scored an average of 1.87 goals on the road. Unfortunately for them, Gonzalez’s men have come up short at the back, very short indeed. They have conceded the most goals overall in the Western Conference, giving away more than any Eastern Conference team. They have also conceded the most road goals, offering virtually zero resistance, surrendering an average of 2.62. Needless to say, their games are usually high-scoring.

History with the New York City hosts

Historically, this is not a fixture that has been kind to the Earthquakes, who have failed to win any of their previous eight matches against NYCFC, five of which they have lost. However, they are undefeated in two against Saturday’s hosts, following a 2-2 tie at Yankee Stadium back in 2023, while the pair once again tied 2-2 at this venue in friendly action in February.

Goals on the cards

Thanks to a combination of having a promising forward line and virtually no defensive resistance, the Earthquakes very often find themselves involved in high-scoring games, so it’s a little surprising to see that ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ is available at odds as high as +155, which could be considered a little generous.

In their respective home and away games, both teams have been in promising form, while they both have offensive players in hot form, which is never a bad thing. For NYCFC, Hannes Wolf has joined the party of late, scoring two in his last three, chipping in with some assists too, while Santiago Rodriguez continues to look threatening. The Uruguayan has five goals and four assists this term and is not a player to take lightly.

For the visitors, Jeremy Ebobisse has been a livewire when playing, returning to the scoresheet last time out, so do not be surprised if he enters this match full of confidence. Cristian Espinoza is enjoying a superb campaign as the orchestrator going forward, registering no less than 10 assists in just 15 games.

The way this SJ Earthquakes team plays simply lends itself to goals. They score regularly and they concede with even greater regularity, which is why four of their last five away games in MLS have contained at least four goals, with them recording away-day scores of 4-2, 2-3, 4-3 and 4-3 since the start of April.

All things considered, with the visitors set to continue pushing forward, and with the hosts in decent scoring form, this game could very easily explode into life, as is now the norm for the Earthquakes on the road. Taking ‘Over 3.5 Goals’ with the United States’ sportsbooks is far from the worst option betting wise. So for the betting predictions and picks for this NYCFC vs San Jose Earthquakes preview, we rely on this one:
