Colorado Rapids vs Minnesota United Preview, Picks, Betting Predictions

Kervin ArriagaColorado Rapids get back to business on home soil in the MLS following what was a difficult away-day last time out. They host an in-form Minnesota Utd team at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (9.30pm ET Saturday). Can the hosts regain the winning thread? Or will the Loons prove too tough to face?

After turning a corner in April, going four games without a win, winning three of those, the Rapids have struggled to maintain any sort of consistency. Their unbeaten run came to an end away at Cincinnati, before they regained the winning thread at Yankee Stadium, but they have since failed to keep things going. Having lost to the Earthquakes, they bounced back at home to the Whitecaps, before last time out, they suffered a heavy defeat away to RSL, conceding five goals. They are now looking to bounce back.

In contrast, the Loons have improved in recent weeks, picking up in terms of consistency. They have lost none of their last five, winning four of those. Last time out, following a home draw with the Galaxy, they got the better of the Timbers, winning 2-1. That triumph has landed Eric Ramsey’s men in second spot in the Western Conference. They have two games in hand on the current league leader, so a win here would put them in a strong position.

Rapids still hard to beat at home

The Rapids have been far from consistent of late but they are still far from an easy team to face at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, where they have picked up a respectable 10 points from six games. They have also won three of their last four in front of a home crowd, beating the likes of LAFC, FC Dallas and the Vancouver Whitecaps, two of which are currently ranked in the top seven. Such victories bode well.

Last time out on home soil, Armas’ men battered the Whitecaps in all areas, winning by a much more comfortable margin than the 1-0 scoreline suggested. A repeat of that effort here would likely see them be too good for a visiting team that have not been as dangerous on the road as the bare results may have us believe.

Loons lucky on the road

In terms of results, which are of course what matter most, Saturday’s visitors have impressed away from home. If we scratch beneath the surface, we can see that they have been giving up quite a lot of chances, often more than they create, which if continued is a recipe for less impressive results.

For example, last time out away from home against Atlanta United, the Loons did get the job done thanks to some clinical finishing from both Kervin Arriaga and the impressive Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi, but they failed to create much, posting just 0.57 xG. It’s impossible to be so clinical in the long term, so such efforts should be seen as cause for concern. It is also worrying that the visitors haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last four, during which time the Rapids have recorded two shutouts.

Rapids looking for a rare win

The Rapids have struggled to get the better of the Loons in recent times. They’ve lost each of the last two renewals of this fixture, while they have now won just one of their last five games against Minnesota United, four of which they have lost. When the pair last met at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, in 2023, the Loons won 2-1.

Hosts Colorado to get it done

Sure, they tasted defeat last time out, but Chris Armas’ men can be forgiven for coming unstuck away against the Western Conference leaders. In general, their home form has been strong, which is not something to ignore here.

Not only have the Rapids won three of their last four home games, but they have bettered their opponents in terms of xG in each of their last four at home, giving less away than finals results might suggest. In those last four home fixtures, they conceded very respectable expected goals totals of 0.77, 1.09, 0.95 and 0.69. These numbers are far from the be-all-and-end-all, but they do show us that Saturday’s hosts are doing a good job of preventing their opponents from creating an abundance of chances. Moreover, they have produced xG for numbers of 1.54, 1.48, 1.45 and 1.54, which also tells us that they are doing a good job of creating more than they have allowed, posting an encouraging xG difference of +0.63.

In contrast, the visitors, despite getting some promising results away from home, haven’t done so well in terms of the underlying numbers. They have been beaten in terms of xG in three of their last four away games, conceding an average of -0.84.

Ultimately, this looks like a very good opportunity for the hosts to regain the winning thread. Yes, the Loons have enjoyed a fruitful spell of late, but they have certainly enjoyed chunks of luck on their travels and that good fortune could come to an end at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park if they continue to create less than they surrender. So the betting predictions and picks for this Colorado Rapids vs MNUFC preview against the USA bookies are:
