New York Red Bulls vs FC Dallas Preview, Picks, Betting Predictions

Jesus FerreiraAfter picking up a first win of the campaign on matchday two, the New York Red Bulls return home, against FC Dallas, for their first game of the season at Red Bull Arena on Saturday (7.30pm ET). As they head out on the road for the first time this term, the visitors will be looking to improve after losing at home last time out.

It has been a slow and steady start to the campaign for the Red Bulls, who after two games have themselves a very respectable four points, thanks to securing a tie and a win. First time out, they didn’t offer too much offensively, but they were nice and strong at the back, keeping a clean sheet against Nashville SC away from home, before traveling to Houston, where they improved in the offensive third, scoring twice on their way to beating the Dynamo. The team, now coached by Sandro Schwarz, will be looking to continue improving in front of their own fans.

For the visitors, FC Dallas, the campaign started well. First time out this season, they got the better of the San Jose Earthquakes on home soil, winning 2-1. They were victorious late in the day thanks to a 94th minute goal from youngster Dante Sealy. They would have been looking to build on that result on matchday two, but they were unable to kick on, losing at home to CF Montreal. Do they now have what it takes to bounce back at a venue that is far from easy to visit?

Can RBNY score more goals?

Last season, we saw the Red Bulls stand strong in lots of games. They defended well and often frustrated teams, but when push came to shove in the final third, they just couldn’t score enough goals to propel themselves into the upper echelons of the Eastern Conference, nor did they have the firepower to go deep into the playoffs. During the regular season, they scored an average of 1.05 goals, which meant that they were the third lowest scorers in the Eastern Conference and the fourth lowest in MLS overall.

So far this season, they have scored two goals in two games, performing as if regular scoring may be a problem. Thankfully, Lewis Morgan, who top-scored for NYRB in 2022 with 15 goals and who missed nearly all of the previous campaign with an injury, is fit again, which gives the Red Bulls a big boost. The Scotsman scored last week and will be a key player if staying fit. Hopefully, his presence can help Schwarz’s men to be more fruitful in the final third.

FC Dallas looking quite open

Last season, in the Western Conference, Saturday’s visitors were one of the stronger teams in a defensive sense. They surrendered an average of just 1.08 goals per game, making them the second-best defensive team in the Western Conference. In fact, across all of Major League Soccer, only two teams conceded less goals than Nico Estévez’s men.

However, this time around, they have looked quite open. Of course, it is still early days, but after two games, the defensive signs are not quite as strong. The visitors are without a clean sheet in their first two games, conceding three goals, and we can’t really say that they were unlucky as they surrendered plenty of chances in those games. To be honest, when beating San Jose by two goals to one on matchday one, they were perhaps slightly fortunate not to concede a second.

Red Bulls on top

Being from different conferences, these two don’t always encounter each other, at least not season after season. This will be the first time that they have met since 2022. When they have faced off in recent years, Saturday’s hosts have tended to thrive. The Dallas boys are without a win in this fixture since 2012, while they have not secured a competitive victory at Red Bull Arena since 2006.

Bet on both teams to find the net

As touched on in this preview above, last season the hosts struggled for goals, but the return of Lewis Morgan clearly galvanised the Red Bulls on matchday two. So do not be surprised if they hurt a Dallas side that has started the season in quite open fashion. At the same time, though, the Red Bulls didn’t keep things that tight against the Dynamo last weekend, not only conceding a goal but surrendering 1.33 xG.

We know that the visitors, FC Dallas, have struggled defensively at the start of this campaign. They are yet to keep a clean sheet, while they have given up expected-goals totals of 1.70 and 1.55, neither of which scream defensive strength. Of course, they have offered plenty at the other end, scoring in each of their two games so far this season, and in new signing Petar Musa, who joins from Benfica in Portugal and who scored on debut last time out, they may just have a goal-getter in their midst. On top of that, they still have Jesus Ferreira, who scored 13 MLS goals last season and 18 the season before, to call upon too.

Overall, we’ve seen enough from this pair during the opening weeks to conclude that ‘Both Teams to Score’ is a smart play at the odds from the sportsbooks. So for our betting picks and predictions for this RBNY vs FCD preview, we rely on the one tip:
