The battle for FedEx Cup points begins to intensify and we have a much stronger field this week for the 2022 edition of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. The event is relatively new to golf’s PGA Tour with the first competition taking place as recently as 2019.
With many of the top players having rested since the final Major of the season, it is a more competitive feel to this important event. Let’s see what the USA sports betting sites and sportsbooks make of it.
Patrick Cantlay is the highest ranked player in attendance this week and he starts as favorite to win at best industry odds of 11/1. Cantlay is making his Rocket Mortgage debut but he’s not finished outside of the top 15 in each of his last five starts and is primed to get back to the winner’s enclosure soon.
Next up in the outright winner’s market is Tony Finau who came from behind on Sunday to claim the 3M Open title. Finau was the favorite for that event and he is available this week at a top price of 14/1. He has added more all-round quality to his power hitting game and it is worth noting that he led the field in Scrambling.
Heading up the rest, ahead of Thursday’s first tee time, are Will Zalatoris at 16/1 and Cameron Young at 20/1. Zalatoris continues to look for that breakthrough win and there is every chance that it could come in this type of field. Cameron Young has enjoyed an outstanding debut year and currently lies 13th in the FedEx standings. He has some seriously good stats and ranks second for Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, which could be relevant this week.
Next up is Max Homa at 25/1 while Adam Scott and Kevin Kisner are both on offer at a best of 33/1. Homa has two wins among ten top 20 finishes this season but needs to respond after missing the cut at the Open Championship. Kisner could be one to watch: He’s found some form and has a good record in this event with two top ten finishes including a solo third place in 2020.
Defending champion Cameron Davis is on the very fringes of this group in the bookies’ betting. The Australian edged out Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann in a playoff 12 months ago and he can be backed at best odds of 35/1. Davis prepares for his defense on the back of some solid form which has delivered four top 10 finishes in his last nine starts.
Keegan Bradley jointly heads up the outside bunch this week at a top price of 40/1. Bradley tied for 14th here last year but failed to make the cut on the recent European leg of the PGA Tour.
Davis Riley and Denny McCarthy are also available at 40/1 while Adam Hadwin and Sahith Theegala are further back at 45/1. A clutch of players follow at 50/1 with Webb Simpson, Si Woo Kim, Cameron Tringale and Maverick McNealy all quoted at that figure.
Of that bunch, McNealy could be the man to watch. He has recorded two Top 10 finishes in July and has a good record in this tournament.
Other players to consider from within the outside section can include Gary Woodland at 55/1, Russell Henley at 55/1, Chris Kirk at 60/1, Troy Merritt at 70/1, Cameron Champ at 80/1, Luke List at 100/1 and Ryan Palmer at 100/1.
Our Preview’s Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions, Course & Betting Trends plus Picks
The Detroit Golf Club has been the permanent home for the Rocket Mortgage Classic since it was first run in 2019. The inaugural tournament was won by Nate Lashley while subsequent editions were claimed by Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Davis.
The course is a par 72 and there is some reasonable length at a shade under 7,400 yards. Low scoring has been a feature of the event with Davis’ aggregate of -18 being the worst of the three winning totals to date.
On his way to winning here 12 months ago, Cam Davis led the field in par-5 scoring and averaged 4.25 at those par 5 holes across the four days. He also ranked highly for Driving Distance while his accuracy stats were a bit mixed.
Scrambling could be vital and this preview is looking looking for another strong all-rounder when it comes to our betting predictions and picks. We’re torn between two golfers with Will Zalatoris and Cameron Young both making good cases. Young has solid stats across the board but Zalatoris could edge it in terms of par 5 scoring but Young is included in a group of three other strong top 10 finish selections. These are the betting picks and predictions for this 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic preview:
- Will Zalatoris to win at a best price of +1600 (16/1) with BetOnline.
- Top 10 Finish Picks (prices with BetOnline, who are best odds on all these selections): Zalatoris (+215), Cameron Young (+225), Davis Riley (+450) and Chris Kirk (+450).
