While the Ryder Cup may have lacked its usual drama, it’s always going to be tough for any tournament to follow up. This week’s 2021 Sanderson Farms Championship has the dubious honor of continuing the new PGA Tour season and, as expected, the vast majority of players involved at Whistling Straits are absent.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia is, however, involved while many players who were challenging for a place on the US team will also be lining up at the Country Club of Jackson, Mississippi. So there is plenty to get our teeth into in a bid to find some sound betting picks and predictions for this week’s big golf tournament preview.
Most leading offshore stateside sportsbooks have two joint favorites for this tournament with Will Zalatoris and Sam Burns available at best industry odds of 16/1. Burns comes into this event on the back of a breakthrough season with his first Tour win and eight top 10 finishes. He also has a decent record at the Sanderson Farms Championship with a tie for third in 2018.
Zalatoris also claimed his first Tour win last season and tops the Power Rankings going into Thursday’s first tee time. Just behind the market leaders at 18/1 is Sungjae Im who lost out in a playoff to Sebastian Munoz in 2019.
Sergio Garcia made a welcome return to winning ways here in 2020 as he edged out Peter Malnati by one stroke. Garcia can also be found at 18/1 but, elsewhere, he’s listed at a best of 20/1.
Another Sanderson Farms runner up – Corey Conners – starts off the chasing bunch at 22/1. Canada’s Conners finished four strokes behind Cameron Champ in 2018 and he was consistent on Tour last season.
Then we have a significant gap in the outright betting odds before Mito Pereira, Keegan Bradley and Si Woo Kim arrive at 35/1. Of that list, Pereira is attracting interest with three top six finishes in his last five PGA Tour outings.
Next up is Charley Hoffman at 35/1 and the veteran is a tempter – having given us a number of top 10 finish profits in the past. Hoffman tied for sixth here in 2020 and is worth a look for a single digit finish once again.
Other names to consider from the chasers include Cameron Tringale at 35/1, Harold Varner III at 35/1 and Kevin Streelman at 40/1.
There are at least two former Champions with tempting odds in the outside bunch. Sebastian Munoz enjoyed that Sanderson Farms Championship victory in 2019 and the Colombian looks generous at his best odds of 55/1.
Then there is last year’s runner up Peter Malnati: The 34-year-old has won just once on the PGA Tour and that solitary victory came in this very tournament back in 2015. Malnati is as high as 150/1 in places but clearly he likes this tournament.
Other outsiders carrying interesting prices this week include Gary Woodland at 60/1, Matthew Wolff at 66/1, Chris Kirk at 80/1, Brandt Snedeker at 100/1 and Matt Wallace at 100/1. Ignoring those Ryder Cup absentees, it is a respectable field with some depth to it but what will it take to get over the line on Sunday?
Our Golf Preview’s Sanderson Farms Championship 2021 Course & Betting Trends with Picks & Predictions
This tournament first saw life as the Magnolia Classic in 1968 with Mac McLendon winning the first edition. Following a number of name changes, new sponsors Sanderson Farms became involved in 2013 and the competition was switched to its current venue a year later.
The Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi is a par 72 course with some good length at 7,400 yards so there is some assistance for the power hitters in places.
Last year’s field averaged a shade over 71 so there are certainly some challenges. 2020 Champion Sergio Garcia led the field in Driving Distance and in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. He also co-led in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Greens in Regulation.
Considering those returns, it is perhaps surprising that Garcia didn’t win by a bigger margin but his putting was relatively weak.
It seems that we are looking for a solid all-rounder and the name that we keep coming back to is that of Sam Burns. We don’t like picking favorites but 16/1 is as long as it gets for anyone at the top of the market and Burns has the game that can match Garcia’s stats from 2020.
The stats are relevant and his form is consistent so Sam Burns for the win is our main betting pick. In a strong field, there could well be some value in the top 10 finish markets and you should consider Charley Hoffman, Keegan Bradley and Matthew Wolff for single digit finishes.
So these are our predictions for this Sanderson Farms Championship 2021 golf preview:
- Sam Burns to win at +1600 (16/1) with Bovada. He is +1400 (14/1) Intertops and BetOnline.
- Top 10 Finish Picks: Burns (+175), Charley Hoffman (+275), Keegan Bradley (+325) and Matthew Wolff (+650). All those odds are with BetOnline, though Bovada & Intertops will also publish top 10 betting lines shortly.
