Scottish Open 2024 Golf Odds Guide, Predictions, Picks & Betting Preview: Tip Of The Aberg

Ludvig AbergWith one week to go until the final Major of the season, most of the world’s best golfers have switched to the UK to get used to local conditions. Ahead of the Open Championship, the Scottish Open 2024 provides a real test on the links course at North Berwick.

Scottie Scheffler sits this one out but many of the top 50 are here including Rory McIlroy who returns after his horror show on the final day of the US Open.

Last week at the John Deere Classic we claimed another big winner. On the back of Bryson DeChambeau’s 22/1 conversion at the US Open, Davis Thompson came through at a mighty 25/1. It has been a great run and this Scottish Open preview, with its predictions & betting picks, aims to keep it going.

Everyone is waiting to see how McIlroy reacts following that slump but he is the defending Scottish Open champion and he slots in as favorite for a successful defense. Rory can be backed at best industry odds of 8/1, while Xander Schauffele is marginally further back at a top price of 17/2.

The Northern Irishman took the title following a brilliant battle with Robert MacIntyre down the last few holes, and he looks rested and relaxed ahead of Thursday. Schauffele won this event a year earlier, seeing off Kurt Kitayama in 2022, and the PGA champion continued a solid run with a tie for 13th at the Travelers Championship.

Collin Morikawa heads the rest at 14/1, closely followed by Ludvig Aberg at 16/1. Morikawa is the form golfer in the field and has been rejuvenated following his tie for third at the Masters in April. Aberg is certainly a contender, although some are put off by the fact that he missed his first Tour cut as a professional here a year ago.

Next are Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland with both men available at 22/1. Fleetwood was a solo runner-up in this event in 2020 and was in contention for much of the tournament last year. Hovland has rested after the first seriously bad run of his career.

Moving through, Tom Kim is at 28/1, followed by Min Woo Lee and Hideki Matsuyama at 30/1. Lee was the Scottish Open champion in 2021, edging out Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Detry in a playoff. Others to mention in this section include 2021 runner-up Matt Fitzpatrick, plus Justin Thomas and Sungjae Im who can all be backed at 40/1 in places.

It may be a surprise to see Robert MacIntyre out at best industry odds with the USA sportsbooks of 50/1. The Scot pushed Rory McIlroy to the wire last year and he won the Canadian Open at the start of last month.

Another player who could offer value at that same top price of 50/1 is Aaron Rai. The Englishman has shown consistent recent form on the PGA Tour. He is another former Scottish Open champion, winning in 2020.

Elsewhere in the underdog section, reigning Open champion Brian Harman is also listed at 50/1, and he is followed by Corey Conners and Wyndham Clark at 55/1. Harman finished in a tie for 12th here last year on the way to his first Major success.

Sahith Theegala interests this preview at 60/1. He is one of our semi-regular top 10 finish picks but how will he adapt to Scottish conditions? Also at 60/1 are Max Homa and Sepp Straka who could mount a challenge.

Other names to consider in a packed outsiders section include last week’s winner Davis Thompson at 66/1, Jordan Spieth at 66/1, Tom McKibbin at 80/1, Adam Scott at 80/1, Rasmus Hojgaard at 90/1, Billy Horschel at 100/1 and Will Zalatoris at 100/1.

Our 2024 Scottish Open Course & Betting Trends with Predictions & Picks Verdict for this Preview

The Renaissance Club in North Berwick has been the permanent home of the Scottish Open since 2019. It is a par 70 but has above average length at 7,237 yards. Fairways have been narrowed since the course opened in 2008, while there will be all the usual challenges that links golf provides. The conditions have been wet across the whole of the UK recently, and rain is currently forecast for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Putting Average has been the key stat in recent renewals. Accuracy will be important, but it could all come down to a battle with the flatstick.

The golfer who interests us this time is Ludvig Aberg. He has the form and stats, and looks to be able to adapt to any conditions. That missed cut here 12 months ago is a minor concern, but the Swede has matured quickly and is in a good position to claim his second significant win in Europe.

Aberg for the outright win is the main tip for this preview, along with some more top 10 finish betting picks and predictions, as we look to maintain our own profitable run.
