The serious business begins this week with the return of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The series starts on Thursday with the PGA Tour’s 122 best golfers teeing it up at the St Jude Championship 2022.
Over the next few weeks, those fields will slim down until we reach the Tour Championship at the end of this month. Last week at the Wyndham Championship we secured another top 10 finish return (+375) as J.H. Kim delivered. We’d have received a lot more had we backed the South Korean for the win but it continues a decent run for us which we’ll look to build on down in Memphis Tennessee with this preview and predictions article.
Rory McIlroy has been back to his best through much of this PGA Tour season. He could have claimed two Majors if he’d returned better final rounds but it’s been a consistent year for the Northern Irishman and he leads the market this week at best industry odds of 11/1.
Rory has been quick out of the blocks and he leads the Tour in Round One scoring. He also leads the way in Adjusted Scoring and that could prove crucial across the four days.
Scottie Scheffler leads the FedEx Cup standings going into Thursday while Australia’s Cameron Smith offers the closest challenge. Both men claimed their first Major tournament this season and they are listed among three joint second favorites. Scheffler and Smith, along with Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas, are all on offer at top prices of 18/1 in places.
Thomas was a winner on this TPC Southwind Course in 2020 when the event was known as the WGC Invitational. Scheffler heads those standings and he has good relevant stats while Smith is nicely rested following victory at the Open Championship last month.
The betting continues to be tight with three players available at 20/1 in places. Jon Rahm, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Tony Finau are the men in question and all three make strong cases. Fitzpatrick is the new US Open Champion while Finau comes into Thursday on the back of two consecutive wins in recent weeks.
It has been a mixed season for Rahm although there was a victory in Mexico a few weeks back. He has been inconsistent and it may surprise many to learn that he still leads the Tour in Total Driving and Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. Clearly the Spaniard is struggling with his all-round game but those could be useful stats.
Moving through, Will Zalatoris is quoted at a best of 28/1 while Jordan Spieth, Sam Burns, Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa are all available at 30/1 in places. Sam Burns could be one to watch. He was a runner up at TPC Southwind last year and has enjoyed a breakthrough season. Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris have been finding form in recent weeks but Spieth and Morikawa are not in great touch coming into Thursday.
It’s a strong field as you’d expect for this type of event so the outsiders will still carry some relatively short odds. Viktor Hovland kicks off this section at best odds of 35/1 while Shane Lowry and Joohyung Kim can both be found at 40/1. Kim’s win on Sunday was impressive for many reasons and nothing less than victory would have seen him enter the playoffs. He has momentum and could be worth watching once again.
In a lengthy outside bunch, other names to take into account include Billy Horschel at 50/1, Hideki Matsuyama at 50/1, Max Homa at 60/1, Russell Henley at 66/1, plus Seamus Power, Keegan Bradley and J.T. Poston who are all quoted at 100/1.
Our Preview’s St Jude Championship Predictions & Picks Conclusion with Course & Betting Trends
The top 125 golfers in the standings are eligible to play but, with Tommy Fleetwood, Lanto Griffin and Daniel Berger absent, the field is cut down to 122.
TPC Southwind in Memphis Tennessee is the setting for the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs. It’s a par 70 but there is some good length at 7,243 yards. Golfers will require a classic combination of distance and accuracy with plenty of water hazards in play across the course.
After a long dry spell, the small greens will be fast with measurements expected of around 12.5 on the Stimpmeter. It could all come down to a putting contest.
While Scottie Scheffler isn’t quite demonstrating the kind of form that took him to the top of the World Golf Rankings, he remains in good shape. It is also worth noting that this is his fifth appearance at TPC Southwind and he has more experience of this course than most players in the field.
Scheffler also leads the PGA Tour in Greens in Regulation and that could be the most significant stat over the four days. Scottie Scheffler for the win is the main tip while there are three other top 10 finish picks as the FedEx Cup series gets underway. So, if you want a bet with one of the top United States’ sports betting sites, also known as sportsbooks, then these are our St Jude Championship betting predictions and picks for this golf preview:

- Top 10 Finish Picks (all odds with BetOnline who are best odds on all these players): Scheffler (+170), Sam Burns (+375), Joohyung Kim (+400) and Billy Horschel (+425).
