Two clubs with a focus on the European places face off in this London derby on Sunday (10am ET). For West Ham, there is a genuine possibility of finishing in the top four and that would lead to their first ever spell in the Champions League next season.
Arsenal have endured another disappointing campaign but, having beaten rivals Tottenham last week, they remain hopeful of a minor Europa League place when the season comes to a close.
That should leave us with an entertaining 90 minutes with plenty to play for and we should also find some interest from a betting perspective.
There’s a very tight moneyline market for this game with Arsenal just out in front as favorites. The Gunners can be claimed at a general +150 while David Moyes’ West Ham are close behind at +175. Completing the result betting is the draw which is on offer at around the +230 mark in most places.
Form is good in both camps: West Ham have won three of their last five matches while two defeats in that period came against the big Manchester clubs, United and City. Arsenal may have lost to Olympiakos in the Europa League on Thursday but they still managed to progress in that competition thanks to a 3-1 win in the first leg. Prior to that reverse, the Gunners won three of their previous four and claimed impressive victories against Leicester City and Spurs.
It is looking evenly matched and a draw is a tempter at those odds so let’s move on and consider the players who can alter the course of this game.
Individual goal scorer betting shows the Arsenal pair of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette heading the markets. Both men are available at +400 to find the net first while West Ham’s Michael Antonio is marginally further back at +500. Some value picks from midfield include Arsenal’s Nicholas Pepe at +800 while the Hammers’ Tomas Soucek is a man to watch at +900. Czech international Soucek is right up there with West Ham’s top scorers with eight league goals this season.
Both Teams to Score is available for Sunday’s match at general odds of around -140. This isn’t the worst price that we’ve seen for BTTS and the stats are encouraging. In their last five matches, West Ham have scored eight times although Both Teams to Score would have only landed twice in that period.
Over in the Arsenal camp, the BTTS figures are much better. Prior to that 0-1 loss to Olympiakos in midweek, Both Teams to Score would have landed in each of the Gunners’ last five games.
Based on those statistics, the trends suggest that we might see a few goals in this match. A stake at a modest level of Over 2.5 combined goals would currently return a best of +100 but we feel you can be a touch braver and go above 3.5 to get a general +230.
USA Betting will round off as always with some suggestions in the Correct Score markets. Our preference would be for a small wager on a 2-2 draw and this is currently quoted at best industry odds of +1450. Alternatively, keeping to the theme of a high scoring game, a 3-1 win for Arsenal is on offer at a best of +2300 while the same scoreline in favor of West Ham rises to a top price of +2500.
Our Preview’s WHUFC vs AFC Betting Predictions & Picks Conclusion
We suspect that this is one of those occasions where the primary U.S friendly sportsbooks have got it right. It should be a very tight 90 minutes between two in-form and evenly-matched sides. Fortunately, the draw carries the longest odds in the moneyline market so we’re going to make this our first pick of the match.
It should be a game with plenty of attacking action at either end of the pitch. We can probably disregard Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Olympiakos on Thursday as the game was already won and manager Mikel Arteta made a number of changes to the starting XI. Prior to that reverse, the Gunners had a strong record in front of goal and we expect that to continue. West Ham are also in good touch with eight goals in their last five.
We’ll therefore take Over 3.5 goals, which is also available at reasonable odds this weekend. As for an individual scorer, West Ham’s Michail Antonio is the man. The forward has a reasonable scoring ratio of seven in 17 league matches this season and has a happy habit of striking in important games.
An entertaining 90 minutes awaits at the London Stadium and let’s aim to boost our enjoyment by landing some winning picks. These are our WHU vs AFC predictions and picks verdict for this preview:
- Take the draw @ best odds of +245 with Bovada.
- Go over 3.5 goals @ +240 with Bovada. It is +230 with Intertops.
