Golf is set to make a welcome return to the sporting schedules in May with the second running of Tiger vs Phil. This exhibition match was first held in November 2018 and while there was a huge $9 million purse available to the winner, charity was a beneficiary too and that’s likely to be a major focal point in the current landscape.
No confirmed date has been set for the rematch but organizers have confirmed that Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson II will happen in May and, to accompany the news, BetOnline has immediately put up a host of interesting markets.
Format and Teams
Our two opponents, Woods and Mickelson, are among the most successful golfers in history but this year they are set to be joined by two NFL legends. Tom Brady will be partnering with Mickelson while Peyton Manning will be on board with Woods.
The competition in 2018 took place at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas and was played out as a straight matchplay over 18 holes. In 2020, Tiger vs Phil II is likely to use the same format but the addition of two celebrity amateurs has made things more interesting, both for spectators and the betting community.
The first market to take care of is the moneyline bet for the straight win and BetOnline have identified clear favorites. The Woods and Manning pairing lead the way at odds of -225 while Mickelson and Brady are on offer at +195. Those odds imply the favorites have a 69% chance of clinching victory.
Back in 2018, Mickelson won this event on the 22nd hole and the contest was tight all the way through. Phil held a one-shot lead at times while Tiger was never ahead and it should be equally close this time around. The addition of Manning and Brady adds an element of the unknown but USAbetting is backing Woods, who has become a Major winner once more since that original match.
BetOnline Sportsbook, for USA customers, has also released a series of prop bets for this rematch: Some are quite obscure as we’ll see in the next section while others are more conventional and relate directly to the game. Firstly, one option that interests us is the market on whether Tiger vs Phil II will go to a playoff. This happened in November 2018 and for the second edition, odds are +250 for yes and -300 for no.
Once again, the appearance of Brady and Manning makes this a tougher call but those watching on TV would welcome a match that goes the distance. A similar market has a price of -130 on the 18th hole being played, while it is -110 that the match finishes before the 18th.
The next market to focus on is the number of holes that will be conceded. BetOnline have set a line at 2.5 and punters can claim odds of +200 to go above that mark while the ‘under’ bet is -275.
Those are our regular match props for Tiger vs Phil II and from there, it starts to get a little more niche.
A number of additional markets focus on the cult of celebrity and, in particular, the presence of those two NFL Legends. There are lots of these to work through but, as a good example, BetOnline have set a market for the logo shown on Tom Brady’s hat. ‘Buccaneers’ is listed at +250 while you can get -400 on TB12.
The appearance of the Vince Lombardi Trophy during the broadcast seems plausible and that option is quoted at odds of -325 so clearly BetOnline agrees that this is a near certainty.
Another bet to consider is on which of the NFL players will have a football highlight shown first. Brady is an obvious favorite here at -110 while Manning can be picked up at -130.
Other specials relate to Woods and Mickelson with odds of -600 on Tiger wearing a red shirt. Red is the color as far as Woods is concerned and this should be one of the safer bets of the day but that relative safety is reflected in those short odds.
NFL fans might be amused to see a market on whether any player will mention the word ‘deflate’. Tom Brady might want to avoid any such reference but there are odds of +100 (evens) on this happening during the round.
Woods vs Mickelson II Rematch Verdict, Picks & Predictions
There are other markets to work through but USAbetting has covered enough as far as our picks are concerned. In terms of the match result, we’re not certain as to what either Tom Brady or Peyton Manning will bring to the table but we feel that Woods has improved sufficiently since November 2018 to carry his teammate. Woods and Manning to win is the favorite in the moneyline market but -225 isn’t the worst price.
For greater value, the +200 for over 2.5 holes conceded is the selection. With two ‘non-golfer’s present, there should be enough wayward play to bring this bet into profit.
Finally, mention of the word ‘deflate’ is likely to be too tempting for at least three of the four players on show and, as another market with + odds available, it also offers decent value. Above all, Tiger vs Phil II should give starved golf fans a much-needed lift but with these three picks, we can also look to make it a profitable day. Here are our Woods vs Mickelson predictions and best bets, all with BetOnline:
- Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning to win at -225.
- Over 2.5 Holes to be conceded at +200.
- Any player to say the word ‘deflate’ at +100.
